Lady goes viral for saying she was now closer to god after removing her hijab
By CS Ming
GROWING up in conservative peninsular Malaysia, the hijab is known to us all as a symbol of Islamic modesty among many other things. So it comes as a surprise when a lady recently said that she felt closer to God when she wasn’t wearing her hijab.
On another note, it was unsurprising that the video went viral with a good number of netizens pointing out the danger and falsehood within her statement.
"lagi rapat dengan Allah, walaupun saya bukak"
aku pulak yang takut bila dia keluarkan statement macamni
“Just say that you remove your hijab because you are not popular in the industry. You entered the underground rap scene but there was no career growth,” said @ceciliaptv. Another netizen sarcastically said he felt closer to God after drinking alcohol.
“It is best we do not interfere between the relationship of human and Allah,” said @mrfirdausjailan, adding that God’s view is different from ours.
But the lady in the video had some winning points too. According to her, she previously felt like she was wearing the hijab for others and not herself.
“What’s important as the people of Islam, we are good. I am very close to my father. What makes you truly a good person is your heart, not what you wear. As long as I know what I am, I don’t care,” she said.
According to her, she doesn’t read those hateful and negative comments anyway. A quick check on the internet revealed that the lady in the video was Dahlia, a singer who is also the youngest child to singer Datuk Nora Ariffin.
The interview was conducted during the Anugerah Industri Muzik ke-24. News media Hib Glam reported that earlier, 21 year old Dahlia appeared with a new image without the hijab at AIM24 at Arena Stars, Genting Highlands.
She explained that the decision was made to embark on a new journey and to gain a deeper understanding of religion. Her choice to remove the headscarf after 15 years of wearing it was also fully supported by her family, including her mother and brother. —Sept 16, 2025
