Early findings of probe into Muhyiddin’s alleged RON95 claim with DPP

MCMC says it is still investigating the matter and awaiting further information from TikTok to complete its probe

Former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin denied making a statement on the distribution of government subsidies to foreigners.

PETALING JAYA: The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) has referred the initial findings of its probe into an alleged claim by former prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin on the RON95 subsidy to the deputy public prosecutor.

In a statement, the internet regulator however said it was still probing the matter.

“We reviewed the content, which has since gone viral, along with the social media platform,” it said, referring to TikTok.

“However, we are still waiting for further information from TikTok to complete the investigation.”

MCMC’s statement comes two days after Muhyiddin urged the commission to reveal whether it had completed its investigation, saying it had been three weeks since the probe was initiated.

“Why is MCMC taking so long (to probe the matter)?” he said at Bersatu’s general assembly over the weekend.

Last month, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim ordered MCMC to look into his claim that Muhyiddin had defended the distribution of government subsidies to foreigners.

In a statement, the Prime Minister’s Office also acknowledged the Perikatan Nasional chairman’s denial of having made such a statement.

Sinar Harian previously quoted Anwar as saying that Muhyiddin, the Bersatu president, had questioned the government for burdening foreigners when they have also made significant contributions to the country.

Muhyiddin later denied making such a statement and urged Anwar to furnish proof of his claim.

On Aug 7, MCMC said it had called Muhyiddin to record his statement to facilitate its probe, adding that he would be questioned as a witness.
