The family of UTM student Syamsul Haris Shamsudin, who died in late July, has submitted another official request to the attorney-general for a second post-mortem.

The deceased family’s lawyer Naran Singh confirmed to Malaysiakini that the request had been sent yesterday.

In the same letter, he said, the family is also requesting an inquest and a special investigation task force from Bukit Aman to be formed to investigate the trainee’s death, similar to the ongoing investigation into Zara Qairina Mahathir’s death.

“There were many suspicious things surrounding Syamsul’s death investigation.

“For instance, the present investigating officer stated that there were no criminal elements in his death, despite bruises and injuries seen all over the deceased’s chest.

“We want Bukit Aman to take over the investigation… The mother (of Syamsul) was not allowed to even look at her son’s body. She was very suspicious of this whole thing,” he said.

He added that the family has sent an official letter, requesting that the attorney-general exhume Syamsul’s body for an inquest.

“Until today, there is still no update on the request we sent last week,” said Naran.

Bernama quoted Higher Education Ministry Zambry Abdul Kadir as saying yesterday that the special committee investigating Syamsul’s death was expected to complete their report soon.

He said he has directed UTM to take all necessary measures as well as to fully cooperate with the investigation, and that no individual would be protected if the investigation uncovered bullying or criminal elements.

Suspicious death

Syamsul, 22, died during a Reserve Officers Training Unit (Rotu) exercise in Ulu Tiram, Johor.

His mother, who was informed of his death on July 28, had her suspicions that her son was murdered and called for a full investigation.

Kota Tinggi police chief Yusof Othman later said no criminal elements or external injuries were initially found on Syamsul’s body, though laboratory results are pending to confirm the cause of death.

On Aug 2, Defence Minister Khaled Nordin announced the formation of an inter-ministry committee to probe into the cadet’s death.

Yesterday, Dusun Tua assemblyperson Johan Abd Aziz said Syamsul’s mother was willing to have her son’s body exhumed to aid the investigation.
