Summary

  • Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim urges PAS to get outgoing ministers Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad into Perikatan Nasional’s fold.

  • He says both Rafizi and Nik Nazmi are good leaders and would become an asset to any party that accepts them.

Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim said PAS should attempt to get outgoing ministers Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad to its fold.

This comes after PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said they have no plans to get the duo to join Perikatan Nasional.

“Both are good leaders, and any political party will find them helpful.

“PAS should try to persuade them to be their candidates for the upcoming GE (general election).

“Rafizi in Tambun and Nik Nazmi in Bentong will see a good heavyweight contest,” he said on Facebook.

For the record, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim is the incumbent Tambun MP, while the Bentong seat is held by DAP’s Young Syefura Othman.

No plans to invite

On June 1, Takiyuddin said PN has no plans to invite Rafizi, Nik Nazmi or Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz but would not object if the trio were to cooperate with the opposition bloc in Parliament.

“So far, PN has no intention to invite them – whether Rafizi, Nik Nazmi, or Zafrul - to join PN.

“However, if they want to be with us in Parliament, that is not a problem. In fact, if they want to join PN, that’s up to them.

“However, they (Rafizi and Nik Nazmi) are subject to the anti-party hopping law,” the Kota Bharu MP added.

It should be noted that Zafrul quit Umno last week to join PKR, much to the chagrin of some of his party colleagues.

Madani apologists worried

On that note, Zaid chastised several political analysts for saying PAS would not be courting Rafizi and Nik Nazmi, claiming the duo “lack grassroots support”.

He opined that the analysts are actually worried that the former ministers may be considering the idea.

“They described themselves as political analysts. A more accurate description for them is Madani apologists.

“They are worried that Rafizi and Nik Nazmi will join PAS, so they keep saying that they have no grassroots support,” Zaid added.

He was responding to a report by Free Malaysia Today, which quoted a fellow of the National Professors Council as saying that it was unlikely that PN would take the duo, claiming they lacked support.

“Rafizi and Nik Nazmi won’t be interested in joining other parties as their political ideology and principles are not in tandem with Bersatu’s and PAS’ stance,” Azmi Hassan said.
