Summary

  • MACC is wrapping up its probe against former PM Ismail Sabri Yaakob concerning the Keluarga Malaysia public relations campaign.

  • Azam Baki says investigators are now verifying assets that Ismail Sabri has declared to the agency in February and wants to quiz the latter’s former son-in-law Jovian Mandagie.

  • The agency will propose criminal charges if there are enough “elements” found against the Bera MP.

Former prime minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob has declared his assets to the MACC, as part of the probe into alleged graft in the former’s Keluarga Malaysia public relations campaign.

Graft busters are also preparing to quiz his former son-in-law, Jovian Mandagie, who is now in Indonesia.

“We have to record his statement. I believe the investigating officers are in the process of or have managed to contact him regarding this,” MACC chief Azam Baki said in a press conference today.

He said that Jovian will be questioned partly to verify some of the assets declared by Ismail Sabri.

Submission on Feb 10

According to Azam, the former Bera MP submitted his declaration to MACC on Feb 10.

The agency has recorded statements from a total of 57 individuals so far to facilitate the probe, he added.

“There is a lot of work to verify his assets because Ismail Sabri has served in many sectors, including owning several companies when he was not part of the government.

“So these are among the things we have to consider when investigating. We have to be fair to him by looking into all his income sources over the years,” Azam said.

He added that the Bera MP will be recalled for further questioning only if the need arises.

MACC expects to wrap up the probe by the end of June and forward their findings to the deputy public prosecutor for a decision.

When asked if the agency would propose criminal charges against the former premier, Azam said they would make such a suggestion if investigators find enough “elements” to prosecute Ismail Sabri.

Ismail Sabri is being investigated under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.

It is understood that the probe is related to the expenditure and procurement of funds for promotional and publicity activities, under the Keluarga Malaysia initiative, during his tenure as prime minister, from August 2021 to November 2022.
