PETALING JAYA: RM170mil in foreign currency and 16kg in gold worth nearly RM7mil have been seized in a corruption and money laundering case involving former prime minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, says the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
The MACC said it made the seizure after searching a residence and three other premises believed to have been used as "safe houses".
The foreign currency seized comprised Thailand Baht, Saudi Riyal, Pound Sterling, Korean Won, Euro, Swiss Francs and Chinese Yuan, said the MACC in a statement on Sunday (March 2).
The safe houses were found following investigations into four senior officers who served under Ismail Sabri.
"The investigation is focussing on the expenditure and funds acquired for publicity during Ismail's leadership of the country," it said.
The MACC added that 10 more witnesses would be called in, adding that the former prime minister could be called back again.
It said that as part of the investigation Ismail Sabri was told to declare his assets under Section 36(1) of the MACC Act on Dec 11, 2024, and he submitted the declaration on Feb 10.
"The MACC would like to emphasise that the investigation is being carried out independently and professionally according to the law.
"The MACC is committed to ensuring that any misconduct related to corruption and money laundering is dealt with in the interest of the country," it said.
The investigation is being carried out under the MACC Act 2009 and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001, it added.
