Bizarre or extremist politicking: DAP is accused by PAS of “controlling Friday sermon” in Perak!

Bizarre or extremist politicking: DAP is accused by PAS of “controlling Friday sermon” in Perak!

ALTHOUGH this may sound absurd or mind-boggling, one can bet his last penny that there would be walaun (slang for diehard PAS supporters) who would readily accept the above allegation by their revered leaders as gospel truth.

Such is the sad state of Malaysian politics where fear-mongering of such nature which ultimately aims to trigger racial disharmony/unrest has not only gotten rampant but has become a trademark of what political activist Liyana Marzuki described as “cleric politics”.

CLERIC POLITICS Setahun dulu saya dah bangkitkan. Saya tulis… Show more

For the record, a police report has been lodged against the Gerik PAS division chief Khalit Hassan on Wed (Feb 26) for having committed slander and sedition against Perak ruler Sultan Nazrin Shah and the Perak Islamic Department (JAIPK).

“This statement (by Khalit) is clearly aimed at inciting the people, especially PAS members by alleging that sermon texts in Perak are controlled by DAP,” former Perak state EXCO member Hasnul Zulkaraim Abdul Munaim stated in his police report.

This is believed to be over a sermon on Jan 31 warning against slander that was perceived to be aimed at Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria.

In his report, Hasnul who is the former one-term Amanah state assemblyman for Titi Serong pointed out that Sultan Nazrin had rebuked imam who had refused to read the Jan 31 sermon furnished by JAIPK.

- Sultan Perak, Sultan Nazrin… Show more

In a video footage which has since gone viral, Khalit had claimed in his public talk on Feb 24 which was also aired live on TikTok that “Perak is controlled by DAP” while the state government “is now controlling the (content) of Friday sermon”.

As pro-Madani government backer Mr.Nazril (@Nazril_Iznil) righty put it, since JAIPK “represents Sultan Nazrin, the Perak ruler who is also deemed to be the head of Islamic religion in the state is deemed to have approved the sermon, hence it’s a violation of ethics if an imam refuses to read the provided sermon text”.

Whatever the case is, it is indeed an exaggeration to accuse DAP of ‘ignorantly’ controlling the delivery aspect of Friday sermon given that such jurisdiction lies with the state’s mufti department although the party may have the highest number of seats within the Pakatan Harapan (PH)-led coalition in Perak.

A breakdown of political coalition/parties in the 59-member Perak State Legislative Assembly is as follows: (i) PH (24) with DAP (18), PKR (six) and Amanah (one); (ii) Barisan Nasional (BN) (eight) with UMNO (seven) and MCA (one); and (iii) PN (26) with PAS (17) and Bersatu (nine). – Feb 28, 2025
