PETALING JAYA: 

Umno Youth is lobbying to have a candidate from the wing represent the party in the forthcoming Ayer Kuning by-election, following the death of its incumbent Ishsam Shahruddin last Saturday.

Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh said it was common for his wing to lobby for its members to be selected as candidates in most elections.

“Is Umno Youth lobbying for one of its members to be the candidate? Of course. Lobbying is common whether it’s by Umno Youth, Wanita Umno, Puteri Umno or anyone else.

“But we’ll leave it to the wisdom of the leadership. We’ll submit the name to the president, and ultimately the president will decide,” Bernama quoted him as telling reporters at Menara Dato Onn in Kuala Lumpur.

Ishsam, 59, died after suffering a heart attack following a friendly football match in Penang.

The Tapah Umno chief won the seat in the last general election with a 2,213-vote majority in a five-cornered fight.
