Police nab 13 Chinese nationals and a Malaysian couple who rented out the house for use as a call centre.
Perak police chief Noor Hisam Nordin said the syndicate operated a call centre from the homestay, offering sham jobs to Chinese nationals, Bernama reported.
The raid led to the arrests of 13 Chinese nationals, comprising 12 men and one woman between the ages of 26 and 41.
Police also arrested a Malaysian couple, aged 61 and 63, who had rented out the house and supplied the syndicate members with food.
Noor Hisam said the syndicate would offer online job opportunities to unsuspecting victims. The jobs would require them to complete certain tasks involving online purchases to boost the ratings of products on e-commerce platforms.
The victims were promised “profits” for each task completed, but this never materialised after they made payments for the online purchases.
“Police also seized 12 laptops, six WiFi modems and 88 mobile phones of various brands, estimated to be worth RM80,000 in total.
“All the 15 suspects are under remand until Feb 25,” he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Sections 420 and 120(B) of the Penal Code for cheating and criminal conspiracy.
He said police will check with the immigration department on whether the detained Chinese nationals had violated or misused their visit passes.
