PETALING JAYA
Two youth leaders are at odds as to whether Bersatu is a Malay rights party or one that champions national issues.

Both Bersatu Youth chief Hilman Idham and the wing’s exco member, Wan Meor Safwat Naqiuddin Shamsudin, point to the party’s constitution to back up their respective claims.

Hilman defended his statement that the party has a broad remit, arguing that Bersatu’s constitution clearly stipulates that it would champion national causes.

“What I said at the forum is something that I touched on in my policy speech at the party’s annual general meeting last year,” he told FMT, referring to a forum he took part in on Wednesday.

Hilman was reported as saying that Bersatu was not a party which champions only Malay rights as its constitution calls for members to champion the welfare of Malaysians, irrespective of race or religion.

“Our struggle is a national one and this is stated in the constitution,” the Gombak Setia assemblyman told FMT.

He was responding to Wan Meor, a Bersatu Youth exco member who had hit out at Hilman over his stance.

Wan Meor said Bersatu was formed specifically to champion the Malay and Bumiputera cause.

“It is clearly stipulated in Clauses 1, 2, and 6 which explains the party’s name, the definition of ‘Pribumi’ and its mission, respectively.

“Bersatu is clearly a Malay-based party that champions the rights and the welfare of the Malays, the pribumis, and the Bumiputeras.”

Wan Meor also asked if Hilman had mixed up Bersatu’s ideology with that of PKR.

Hilman was a deputy PKR Youth chief before quitting the party to join Bersatu in 2020
