Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has singled out Plantation and Commodities Minister Johari Abdul Ghani and Defence Minister Mohamed Khaled Norden as the next potential prime minister.
In an interview with Mingguan Malaysia, the veteran politician said he viewed the two Umno ministers as capable and talented to succeed Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
“I like Johari because he is good and smart, and these traits allow him to be a prime minister.
“Khaled, although he often remains quiet, he’s meticulous and free of controversy, other than experienced in politics,” the Malay daily quoted Zaid (above).
Of the two deputy prime ministers, Fadilah Yusof and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Zaid only commented on the Umno president, who he described as “good but controversial”.

“He has a role, but because of his court case controversy, even after being granted a discharge not amounting to an acquittal, the people still remember,” said Zaid, referring to Zahid’s 47 graft charges.
Elaborating, Zaid said he named Johari as his first pick for prime minister due to the Umno vice-president’s vast experience, with backgrounds in economics and finance.
“But that’s up to Umno if they want (Johari). I can even accept Wanita Umno chief Noraini Ahmad because she’s experienced and beautiful,” he added.
Johari, 60, is a chartered accountant and was active in the corporate world for over two decades before starting his political career with Umno in the late 1980s.

UMNO remains an unrepentant corrupt party. Like MAGA, it remains trapped in denial of Najib and, by extension, UMNO's crimes.
