Gerakan president Dominic Lau said Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria is wrong in claiming that recognition of UEC graduates would be a barrier to national unity.

KUALA LUMPUR
Gerakan has rejected Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria’s contention that recognition of Unified Examination Certificate graduates would be a barrier to integration and national unity.

Its president, Dominic Lau, said matters on national education, including the UEC, should not be politicised.

“Gerakan adheres to the Federal Constitution, which serves as our guiding framework. For us, the UEC is not an obstacle to integration and national unity.

“It is also inaccurate to claim that students with UEC certificates or those attending vernacular schools are not proficient in the Malay language,” he told a press conference after officiating Gerakan’s 52nd national convention today.

In a Facebook post yesterday, Razman, who is also opposition leader in the Perak state assembly, said it would be impossible for Malaysia to achieve national integration if the UEC was given recognition in the country.

In a recent interview with a news portal, Razman also expressed concern over the recognition of the UEC, as well as the Malaysia My Second Home programme.

Razman, who is the Gunong Semanggol assemblyman, claimed that these two programmes pose a threat to Malay dominance and could allow non-Malay communities to gain power in Malaysia.

Yesterday, Bersatu leader Azmin Ali also stressed that the issue of UEC recognition should not be politicised.

The Hulu Kelang assemblyman also said he had no issues recognising the certificate when he served as the Selangor menteri besar.
