Silence on whistleblower suggests skeletons everywhere: PSM

PSM is intrigued by the silence of politicians from both sides of the divide over the explosive revelation of a whistleblower allegedly possessing video evidence of a major corruption scandal in a state.

The party’s deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan suspects that it is because the identities of the politicians implicated have not been revealed.

“I suppose everyone is being careful. They don’t want to shoot themselves in the foot just in case it happens to involve their own state or those under their coalition.

“Since the news was published (yesterday), I have been flooded with calls and messages from worried individuals asking if I had any clue which state it is,” he told Malaysiakini.

Arutchelvan said if the politicians were identified, the scenario would have been different, with “blazing guns” and demands for “heads to roll” from the opposing camp.

“They would be shouting about good governance. Multiple police and MACC reports would have been lodged. Press conferences would have been called.

“I would not be surprised if politicians even come forward with the offer to keep the whistleblower safe in their homes apart from supporting his request for protection,” he added.

Arutchelvan said the silence revealed that principles are dependent on circumstances.

“The silence could also signal that there are skeletons in closets everywhere. So nobody wants to be the first to open the door and let the bones fall out,” he quipped.

Arutchelvan also reiterated PSM’s call for the government and MACC to protect the whistleblower.

“This is crucial to ensure that technicalities are not used to impede an investigation or prosecution against elected representatives who have allegedly betrayed their oath of office and the trust of the people,” he added.

Guarantee of protection

Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that the whistleblower is afraid of reprisal and therefore is seeking a guarantee of protection even before lodging an MACC report.

He said the evidence in his possession, if exposed, could have severe political repercussions and alluded that those who would be affected might attempt to silence him.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini revealed that it sighted eight videos, each featuring a different assemblyperson who purportedly received hundreds of thousands of ringgit to support a company’s bid for a project in their state.

The discussions in the video involved a businessperson, whose face was not visible, requesting the politicians, including those holding senior positions, to return the money since the licence for the project had been rescinded.

Malaysiakini is withholding the identities of the politicians at the request of the whistleblower.
