PARLIAMENT | Muhammad Fawwaz Mohamad Jan (PN-Permatang Pauh) wants the practice of “sexy” grid girls during MotoGP races to stop.
The Penang PAS information chief told the Dewan Rakyat today that the practice was against Islamic teachings and the fifth Rukun Negara, courtesy and morality.
"What I want to share today is related to the issue of the tradition of displaying sexy, eye-catching female models throughout the event," Fawwaz (above) said while debating the Supply Bill 2025 for the Youth and Sports Ministry.
He claimed that several MotoGP visitors had complained about the matter.
He said this practice should be stopped like the podium champagne ceremony for Formula One, which had been for years before races were discontinued in Malaysia.
"This (the discontinuation of the champagne ceremony) is a good thing that maybe we can practise in our country, especially in the issue of these eye-catching women," he added.
Critics of grid girls in motorsports events have denounced the practice as sexist and demeaning to women while perpetuating the male gaze.
In 2018, Formula One ended the practice of walk-on grid girls, with commercial operations managing director Sean Bratches calling it outdated.
"While the practice of employing grid girls has been a staple of Formula One Grand Prix for decades, we feel this custom does not resonate with our brand values and is at odds with modern-day societal norms.
"We don’t believe the practice is appropriate or relevant to Formula One and its fans, old and new, across the world," Bratches said.
