Another lawmaker has come out to state that MACC should investigate claims by a whistleblower allegedly possessing video evidence of a major corruption scandal in a state.

Bentong MP Young Syefura Othman, also a member of one of MACC’s special advisory committees, said it is still too early to speculate on the alleged corruption case first reported by Malaysiakini yesterday.

“I only ask witnesses to follow MACC’s advice and lodge a formal complaint so that protection can be given under the Whistleblower Protection Act 2010.

“Beyond that, I leave it to the MACC to conduct further investigations based on available evidence, and take necessary actions under the law,” the DAP central executive committee member told Malaysiakini.

Yesterday, Malaysiakini reported that it sighted eight videos, each featuring a different assemblyperson, who purportedly received hundreds of thousands of ringgit to support a company’s bid for a project in their state.

Identities of the politicians in the videos and the state have been withheld at the request of the whistleblower.

Syefura, however, said each state government will have an existing integrity unit tasked with handling any corruption-related complaint.

“This includes conducting internal inquiries to verify a complaint and give full cooperation to the MACC,” she said.

The discussions in the videos involved a businessperson, whose face was not visible, requesting the politicians, including those holding senior positions, to return the money since the licence for the project had been rescinded.

MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki subsequently confirmed that a meeting between his officers and the whistleblower’s lawyer took place on Oct 30.

Earlier today, Malaysiakini reported that the whistleblower is afraid of reprisal and therefore is seeking a guarantee of protection even before lodging an MACC report.
