Mahkota: Zahid woos Indian voters with crematoriums

MAHKOTA BY-ELECTION | BN chairperson Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has promised to build more crematoriums for the Indian community in Johor
He said Johor Menteri Besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi had raised the matter with Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim in a phone call, who then conveyed it to him.
“This is not a political promise, this is not a promise because of the election. This is a necessity and I am confident that Anwar will certainly do his best for the Indian community in Johor.
“Not only that, but we will also work on identifying a location to place the ashes,” he said during an event with the Indian community at the BN command centre in Taman Sri Kluang last night.
Zahid (above) said he had done something similar in Bagan Datuk, where he is the MP, adding that other religions must be respected.
Not enough crematoriums
Onn Hafiz spoke earlier at the event, asking Zahid for two more crematoriums in Johor at the cost of RM5 million.
“An important issue for the Indian community now is that there are not enough crematoriums in the event of a death.
“Even if there is one, the payment required is too high.
“So tonight I represent the Indian community in Johor, who requested to be given at least two crematoriums totalling RM5 million,” the menteri besar said in his speech.

The event saw a crowd of around 600 people, mainly MIC members.
Several told Malaysiakini that they were from Selangor and would be returning home after the event.
Also present at the event were BN candidate Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah and MIC president SA Vigneswaran.
Vigneswaran said he was confident that the Indian community in Mahkota would vote for Syed Hussien.
The event saw a crowd of around 600 people, mainly MIC members.

The former Dewan Negara president stated this was based on the public’s positive feedback and the Johor government’s efforts to provide for the welfare of the Indian community in the state.
“Residents here can witness how BN addresses issues faced by voters. Our candidate is also an excellent choice - young, experienced in politics, and from a family that has made significant contributions to society,” Bernama reported him as saying.
Syed Hussien and Perikatan Nasional candidate Haizan Jaafar will battle it out on Sept 28 for the Mahkota state seat, which fell vacant following the death of incumbent assemblyperson Sharifah Azizah Syed Zain on Aug 2.
