PETALING JAYA: Umno Youth chief Dr Akmal Saleh should leave his post over the escalation in racial tensions and the recent firebombing of KK Mart outlets, says senator Ti Lian Ker.

“Akmal should take responsibility and take leave from his post as he promised. There are many more Umno Youth leaders who are more responsible and amenable,” the former MCA vice-president said in a post on X today.

He was referring to a report by Utusan Malaysia earlier this month, in which Akmal was reported to have said he would rather lose his post than not defend Islam in the “Allah” socks issue.

He had said that although his struggle to defend the holy word would affect inter-party relations in the unity government, he would continue to defend Islam.

“I don’t care if DAP or any other ministers want to attack me. If Nga Kor Ming says that by doing so I will lose support, I want to tell them that this is how Umno works when people insult Islam.

“I would rather lose my post. I have done my duty to defend my religion. My post comes second,” Akmal was quoted as saying.

Ti also questioned if Umno should take responsibility for having endorsed Akmal and “making his statements and hate speech more legitimate”.

“Should MCA and MIC in Barisan Nasional be held responsible for failing to convene and make a stand in the BN spirit? Should Pakatan Harapan or the (unity) government be blamed for his actions?” the former deputy youth and sports minister said.

Last week, the Umno Supreme Council said it fully supported Akmal’s stand on the controversial issue, despite criticism from MCA and DAP over his persistent call for a boycott of the KK Mart chain.

Umno secretary-general Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki had said after a Supreme Council meeting the Cabinet also respects the party’s stand on the issue.
