Penang keeps its position as state with the highest exports
Selangor continues to account for the highest volume of imports into Malaysia.

PETALING JAYA: Penang retained its position as Malaysia’s largest exporter while Selangor accounted for the largest share of the country’s imports in January 2024.
The northern state accounted for 28.2% of total exports from Malaysia last month.
Johor, with a 22.4% share, came in second followed by Selangor (18%), Sarawak (8.7%) and the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur with 4.5%, according to data from the statistics department that was released today.
Exports from Malaysia rose RM9.8 billion or 8.7% to RM122.4 billion compared with the same month in 2023.
Chief statistician Mohd Uzir Mahadin said most states saw increases in their exports with Johor seeing the highest growth of RM5.6 billion followed by Selangor at RM3.3 billion and Kedah at RM1.2 billion.
However, despite being the state with the largest volume of exports, Penang actually saw a decline in the value of RM2 billion.
The federal territory of Labuan saw the value of its exports decline by RM1.1 billion in January 2023 compared with the same month in 2022, the biggest drop for any state.
Most states also registered increases in imports.
Johor was the state that registered the highest increase in imports at RM7 billion, followed by the federal territory of Kuala Lumpur at RM2.8 billion and Penang at RM1.1 billion.
Selangor continued to dominate imports, accounting for 26.4% of the country’s total. Johor is second with a 23.7% share followed by Penang with 19.1%.
