FMT:
Decision on Najib’s pardon bid expected to be revealed today
When asked by reporters if the matter will be announced today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim says ‘I believe so’.
Earlier, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the Federal Territories Pardons Board has made a decision on Najib Razak’s application for a royal pardon.
KUALA LUMPUR: The decision by the Federal Territories Pardons Board (FTPB) on Najib Razak’s application for a royal pardon is expected to be announced today.
When asked by reporters if the board’s decision will be revealed by today, Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim simply said: “I believe so”.
Previously, Anwar was reported to have said that the board had already decided on the former prime minister’s application. He told reporters to wait for the FTPB’s official statement.
When asked if the decision would affect the unity government in any way, the prime minister maintained that the decision on Najib’s application was solely under the purview of the FTPB and the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.
Najib began his 12-year prison term on Aug 23, 2022, following the Federal Court’s dismissal of his final appeal in the SRC International abuse of power and money laundering case.
His lawyer, Shafee Abdullah, previously said a pardon application was first submitted in September 2022, and that addendums to the petition were filed in October that year and in April 2023.
Rumours of Najib being granted a pardon have been swirling after federal territories minister Dr Zaliha Mustafa confirmed that the FTPB met at Istana Negara on Monday.
Each state has its own Pardons Board, appointed by the respective sultan or governor. The only exception is the federal territories, where members are appointed by the king.
The Pardons Board consists of five members, namely the attorney-general, the chief minister or menteri besar, and a maximum of three others appointed by the king, sultan or governor.
Anwar previously sat on the FTPB, as the federal territories comes under the purview of the Prime Minister’s Department.
Last April, Anwar confirmed that he was part of the Pardons Board that would review Najib’s pardon application. He said there was no conflict of interest in him sitting on the board as the final decision lay with the Agong.
However, after the Cabinet reshuffle in December, Zaliha joined the board after she was made federal territories minister.
