AG applies to have Isham jailed or fined for contempt of court

Attorney-General Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh has submitted an ex-parte application for former Umno information chief Isham Jalil to be jailed or fined for contempt of court.

According to Utusan Malaysia, the application filed on Dec 28 is over an interview titled ”Townhall for Justice: Keadilan Sebenarnya Untuk Siapa”, broadcast on Facebook page “The Malaya Post” on Sept 30, 2023.

In the interview, Isham reportedly made comments about the trial and appeal process of imprisoned former prime minister Najib Abdul Razak’s 1MDB and SRC International cases.

The Malay daily quoted a source saying that the application was mentioned before Judge Collin Lawrence Sequerah yesterday, but the applicant requested for the judge to withdraw from hearing the contempt of court proceeding as Isham’s comments also touched on Sequerah’s involvement in Najib’s ongoing 1MDB trial.

Sequerah agreed to withdraw and the contempt of court proceedings will reportedly be heard before a High Court judge to be decided on later.

A police report on the interview was also lodged on Oct 6, 2023.

Among others, Isham (above) during the interview allegedly accused Sequerah of being biased in not withdrawing from hearing the 1MDB case.

He also purportedly questioned the legitimacy of Najib’s final appeal for the SRC International case at the Federal Court.

Isham allegedly alluded that the panel of five judges, led by Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat, had judged the appeal unfairly.

Isham in the same interview also stated that the trial judge for the SRC International case, Judge Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, now a judge of the Court of Appeal, acted in a biased manner when hearing the case.

According to the affidavit, the statements made by Isham in the interview contained a real risk that could undermine the public’s confidence in the judiciary and could be considered interference with the administration of justice.

Also requested are other orders deemed appropriate by the court and costs to be assessed later.
