Daim: Malaysia has no choice but to fight corruption

“We need to cleanse the system.” Believe it or not! In June 2018, Daim Zainuddin gave an interview published in The Star calling on the Government to fight corruption at all levels. He gave the interview at the Ilham building, which the MACC has now seized.


Going by Daim’s efforts to fight corruption, he must welcome PMX Anwar Ibrahim’s efforts to wipe out corruption.

In the interview, he says: “Malaysia has no choice. Corruption has permeated all levels of the government. We are now at a crossroads. Our only way forward is to cleanse the system and eliminate this malady afflicting this nation. To do that, political willpower will be the main criterion for success. And I am confident that this new Pakatan Harapan Government has the nerve to do just that. People are watching.” Daim said this in his capacity as chairman of the Eminent Persons Council.


Now, the bells toll for Daim. “For whom the bells will toll” is a famous quote. It means: "We should feel a sense of belonging to the whole of the human race, and should feel a sense of loss at every death because it has taken something away from mankind.” The church bells toll during a funeral ceremony.


Another apt quote applicable here is a sheep in wolf’s clothing. The moral of “A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing” is that “The evil doer often comes to harm through his deceit.” The moral means that a person who does evil gets harm in return through their method.

Professor Mohamed Zain uncovered more details. Explaining Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s choice states: “Daim's elevation as Senator and, subsequently, Minister of Finance, was part of Mahathir's strategic plan. Mahathir's choice should surprise no one; the two were intimate friends from the same village in Seberang Perak, Alor Setar. Upon becoming Prime Minister on 16 July 1981, the first thing on Mahathir's mind was how to sideline his archenemy, Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.”
