Concessions made to allow Mat Sabu to remain Amanah president
The concessions were made to avoid tension between the supporters of Mat Sabu and Mujahid Yusof Rawa, says an insider.
Mohamad Sabu will remain Amanah president for a third and final term until 2026.
PETALING JAYA: Two concessions were made by Mohamad Sabu in order for him to retain the Amanah presidency for a third and final term in the party elections last weekend, according to a source.
The party leader who spoke on condition of anonymity said the first concession was to allow Mujahid Yusof Rawa – who was elected deputy president and whose camp dominates the new line-up – to appoint the state chiefs.
The second compromise was for Mujahid to succeed Mohamad, better known as Mat Sabu, when the latter’s term ends in 2026, he said.
The source said this was agreed on by the two leaders following the outcome of the party polls which saw 18 of the top 27 people elected into its national leadership committee linked to the former religious affairs minister.
Among the leaders linked to Mujahid are three from Perak: former Manjoi assemblyman Asmuni Awi, Ahmad Termizi Ramli, and Muhaimin Sulam.
Others linked to Mujahid include Selangor state executive councillor Izham Hashim, former Tampin MP Hasan Bahrom, Sabki Yusof, former Selangor state executive councillor Dr Siti Mariah Mahmud, and Lahirul Latigu.
“These concessions were made to avoid tension between the two camps,” the source said.
The source was alluding to rumours that Amanah was divided into two camps, one backing Mohamad and another supporting Mujahid, although the latter rejected such claims on Dec 10.
The party leader however found no issue with Mujahid’s team dominating the line-up.
“It is important for the party to have someone credible like Mujahid to counter PAS’s religiosity.”
On Sunday, Mohamad was chosen by the top 27 forming the party leadership to be Amanah president for another term after coming in eighth with 613 votes in the election.
Mujahid was appointed deputy president after managing to secure fourth place with 699 votes.
