Ramasamy’s crowdfunding drive hits RM1mil mark or two-third of the target

Ramasamy’s crowdfunding drive hits RM1mil mark or two-third of the target

WHILE controversial Muslim preacher Dr Zakir Naik has pledged to donate the entire RM1.52 mil compensation from former DAP stalwart Prof Ramasamy Palanisamy to the Palestinian cause, the latter’s “Solidarity with Prof Ramasamy” fund-raising campaign has reached the RM1 mil mark as at 4.15pm today (Nov 6).

For context, the former Penang chief minister II has been ordered by the Kuala Lumpur High Court on Thursday (Nov 2) to pay Indian national Zakir RM1.52 mil for defamatory remarks with full settlement within 30 days (from Nov 2 lest a 5% daily interest will be imposed).

Notwithstanding Ramasamy’s appeal and seeking a stay order, the RM1.52 mil must be prepared in order to avoid interest being charged.

“We hit RM914, 720.31 as at 11am today (Nov 6) but the fund rose to RM989,000 at 1.50pm and eventually surpassed RM1 mil by 4.15pm. My deepest appreciation and sincere thanks to the public who rally behind me,” an elated Ramasamy told FocusM.

“The support is extremely encouraging. There is great deal of solidarity from Malaysians of all walks of life. We are doing roadshows in Penang (over the weekend), in Kedah today (Nov 6) and tomorrow (Nov 7) in Kuala Lumpur, among others.”

Meanwhile, HINDRAF (the Hindu Rights Action Force) has called on Malaysian Indians and all those supporting freedom of speech and religious freedom to stand by Ramasamy in his time of need.

“Prof Ramasamy was ordered by the High Court to pay an exorbitantly high amount of damages to Zakir Naik in a defamation suit and this type of high award is quite rare in Malaysia,” the movement pointed out in a statement on Saturday (Nov 4). “We must support Prof Ramasamy in his appeal against the decision of High court.”

This has thus prompted non-governmental organisation (NGO) Malaysian Tamilar Kural to initiate a crowdfunding exercise for three three-term Perai MP on Thursday (Nov 2) itself with an update provided by 11am daily.

“In the case of Prof Rama succeeding in the appeal, all the money donated will be channelled to the general public, especially for education and welfare purposes,” the NGO had pointed out.

“Any excess donation beyond RM1.52 mi will also be channelled to welfare and education purposes. With this, we hope the general public will support and stand with Prof Ramasamy who has been a voice for the voiceless Malaysians for many years.” – Nov 6, 2023

  1. The authority should scrutinise every contributor to ensure that the funds are not from overseas militant organisations or local gangster groups.
