Rayer defends DAP Malay-Muslim MPs against 'kafir' remark

PARLIAMENT | RSN Rayer (Pakatan Harapan-Jelutong) today stood up in defence of DAP Malay-Muslim lawmakers who he argued were unfairly targeted by Ahmad Marzuk Shaary’s labelling of the party as "kafir" or infidels.

The Perikatan Nasional’s Pengkalan Chepa MP made the remark during the Supply Bill 2024 debate and Rayer objected to the use of "insolent" and "improper language" as the DAP also has Malay-Muslim MPs from Bangi, Bukit Bendera and Bentong.

"He (Marzuk) made a statement, we all heard him saying that 'DAP is kafir'.

"We (DAP) have MPs from Bentong, Bangi and Bukit Bendera who are Muslims," said Rayer.

Rayer said while many DAP MPs are non-Muslims, it was wrong of Marzuk to brand the entire party as "kafir".

"Please do not be insolent. I ask for the statement to be retracted.

"If I don't stand up to defend Bentong, Bangi, Bukit Bendera who are Muslims, who will?" said Rayer, who raised a point of order against Marzuk.

None of the three DAP Muslim MPs were in the Dewan Rakyat during the duo's exchange which was presided over by deputy speaker Ramli Mohd Nor.

Ramli ruled for Marzuk to retract his statement.

‘Kafir harbi’

In response, Marzuk said he would retract his statement if it was "misinterpreted", as it was only targeted towards DAP's non-Muslim MPs.

He also clarified that his remark was based on a 2016 statement by then Pahang mufti Abdul Rahman Osman who reportedly labelled the DAP as "kafir harbi" or infidels who tried to fight the Muslims and the Islamic religion.

He said PAS had at the time objected to the term "kafir harbi" being used against the DAP as it carries heavy implications with regard to interactions with other non-Muslims.

Earlier, Ramli said he will deliberate on a separate point of order raised against Marzuk by Howard Lee (Harapan-Ipoh Timur) and deliver a decision tomorrow.

This was after Marzuk in his debate repeated PN's claims that Lee in a viral video last month, which has become a subject of police investigation, had falsely interpreted a Quranic verse that touched on loyalty to rulers or leaders.

Throughout Marzuk's debate, Ramli also issued multiple first warnings against MPs who attempted to defy his orders.
