Malaysians are remarkably ignorant about the events, challenges and dangers surrounding the formation of Malaysia 1963-1965. Some of the events surrounding relations with Singapore and Indonesia are more convenient for the politicians if they are forgotten.
In 1963, our Giant neighbour , Indonesia regarded that Malaysia did not have a right to exist. Then, and even today for some people in the Indonesian Government, the "Natural Order of Things" is for the entire Island Borneo to be under 1-Government..Indonesia, of course. Indonesian paratroopers landed near Labis, Johor. It was the Australian Army contingent fromTerendak Camp, Malacca which played the key role in nipping that threat in the bud. Today , there are Malaysian bloggers who call the Aussies as Devil incarnate, forgetting the shared history, and their role in the defence of Malaysia.
Many Malaysians support Russia's invasion of Ukraine, forgetting the need to support the principle that a powerful neighbour must respect the territorial integrity of international boundaries, and not simply steamroll over a smaller neighbour's right to exist as an independent nation.
