PAS apologises to Lau over ceramah incident
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan says Gerakan president Dominic Lau should have been accepted and treated as a guest, in accordance with Islamic principles.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said the decision to field Gerakan president Dominic Lau in Bayan Lepas was done with the agreement of the party’s top leadership.
PETALING JAYA: PAS has apologised to Gerakan president Dominic Lau over an incident where he was reportedly told to leave a Perikatan Nasional ceramah in Sungai Dua, Penang, on Tuesday after showing up without being invited.
PAS secretary-general Takiyuddin Hassan said Lau should have been accepted and treated as a guest, in accordance with Islamic principles.
“PAS expresses great discomfort over the incident and, therefore, apologises to Lau, who was perceived as unwelcome at the event in Tasek Gelugor, Penang, which was also attended by PAS president (Abdul Hadi Awang),” he said in a statement this morning.
Yesterday, Gerakan deputy president Oh Tong Keong urged PAS to explain why Lau was barred from attending the event.
Oh said PAS had disrespected Lau, who he pointed out was a PN deputy chairman and Penang PN chief.
On Wednesday, however, Lau denied being told to leave the ceramah He said he was supposed to meet Hadi at 9pm at the event, but the PAS president ran late and Lau had to leave for a meeting.
Takiyuddin also said that PAS, like other parties, was well aware of the complexities involved in coalition politics, especially in relation to seat distribution or candidate selection.
“In the context of Lau’s selection as PN’s candidate for the Bayan Lepas seat, which is a Malay-majority constituency, PAS is fully aware of the sentiments of its members and supporters following his nomination,” he said.
He said the decision to field Lau was done with the agreement of the party’s top leadership after due process and all conditions being fulfilled.
“PAS members and supporters must, therefore, embrace the decision with an open mind and place trust in the wisdom of the party’s leaders, led by Hadi himself,” he said.
Previously, a group of PAS grassroots members protested against Lau’s candidacy in Bayan Lepas, saying a PAS member should be fielded instead to contest the Malay-majority seat.

Wow ! PAS must really believe they have good probabilities in Penang and they need Gerakan for the Non-votrs, else they would have told Gerakan to Eff Off.
