PETALING JAYA: Perak menteri besar Saarani Mohamad has dismissed speculation of a move to topple his administration following a purported meeting between assemblymen from the unity government and a PAS leader.

Saarani said there was no basis to Perak PAS commissioner Razman Zakaria’s claim that he recently met a few assemblymen from the unity government.

“The statement by the state opposition leader was intentionally made to create the perception of instability within the state government.

“I, along with my fellow executive council members and all government assemblymen, unanimously declare our commitment to continue supporting stability within the government and deny allegations of any efforts to overthrow the current administration,” Saarani said in a statement today.

Yesterday, Razman claimed that a few assemblymen from the unity government had met him recently. He said the assemblymen had gone to see him personally, but declined to comment if moves to change the government were discussed.

Razman, who also declined to state the number of assemblymen or their names, said he would welcome them if they really wanted to support Perikatan Nasional to change the government.

He said although there was no evidence of any move to topple the government, he believed there could be such an attempt based on the few assemblymen who had gone to meet him.

Saarani had previously given an assurance that the unity government in Perak was stable, although there had been speculation that it would fall in July.

He had said the rumours had no basis as government assemblymen had not shown any sign that they intended to give up their seats.

In his statement today, Saarani urged all parties to refrain from polemics that only served to create confusion and unrest among the people.

“I also call upon all party members, including the opposition, to nurture mature politics by providing ideas or constructive criticism for the benefit of the people and the progress of the state, rather than creating instability,” he said.
