I’m ready to help Anwar set country’s economic direction, says KJ
Khairy Jamaluddin also says he will inform Bersatu president Muhyiddin Yassin soon about whether he is joining Bersatu.
Former minister Khairy Jamaluddin called on Anwar Ibrahim to reform the country’s subsidies, taxes and pension scheme within the next two years.
KUALA LUMPUR: Former health minister Khairy Jamaluddin says he is willing to meet Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to share his views on developing the economy.
Khairy, who has criticised Anwar for not having a clear economic narrative, was today asked if he was willing to help Anwar if required.
“Yes, but I also believe the prime minister already has many (economic) advisers who can give him the best input to chart a clear economic course,” he said at a forum at UCSI university here.
He also called on Anwar to reform the country’s subsidies, taxes and pension scheme, adding that the finance minister should embark on such initiatives within the next two years.
“I think by the time we get to 2025, the window would have already closed,” said Khairy.
“Even if he wants to do it then, his coalition partners would disagree as they’d say it would cost them in the ballot boxes.”
Khairy still deciding on Bersatu
When asked about the Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu’s advice for him not to delay his decision on Muhyiddin Yassin’s offer of a seat on Bersatu’s Supreme Council, Khairy said he would give the Bersatu president an answer soon.
In an interview with FMT on Tuesday, Bersatu deputy president Ahmad Faizal Azumu advised Khairy not to delay his decision over whether to accept Muhyiddin’s offer of a seat on Bersatu’s Supreme Council.
Describing the former Perak menteri besar as a “very good friend”, Khairy admitted it would be unfair of him to “keep people waiting for too long”.
“I’m not ruling anything out,” said Khairy.
“Everything is still on the table and, hopefully, I will be able to decide on (Muhyiddin’s offer) soon.”
Khairy, a former MP for Rembau, was expelled from Umno in January for allegedly acting against the party’s interests.
In GE15, he narrowly lost the contest for the Sungai Buloh parliamentary seat, a Pakatan Harapan stronghold, to PKR’s R Ramanan by 2,693 votes.
