Ismail Sabri foresees problems in Umno-DAP 'forced marriage'

Former Umno vice-president Ismail Sabri Yaakob foresees further friction between Umno and DAP following a war of words between some figures within the two parties.

"A ‘forced marriage’ will not work. It must be consensual. In a ‘forced marriage’, there are no feelings for each other. Thus, there will be fissures.

"This is just the beginning (of the relationship) but there are DAP (people) commenting about Umno and Umno commenting about DAP," he said in Kuala Lumpur yesterday, according to Utusan Malaysia.

In January, Penang DAP deputy chief P Ramasamy described Umno's decision to bar the party's presidency - held by Ahmad Zahid Hamidi who is facing corruption charges - from being contested had a negative impact on Pakatan Harapan and Umno's future election outings.

Last week, Perak DAP vice-chief Abdul Aziz Bari opined that Umno's role in the upcoming six-state elections was still uncertain because they do not appear to be able to draw Malay support.

Both Ramasamy and Aziz's comments have drawn scorn from Umno politicians.

Among others, Johor Umno deputy chief Nur Jazlan Mohamed said Malay distrust of DAP was also posing a challenge for the party to win back Malay support.

Nur Jazlan stressed that Umno was committed to making the BN-Pakatan Harapan alliance work and thus, did not draw attention to the matter.

"But when we are quiet, DAP is the one who makes such statements," he said.

  2. There is certainly a hard core of UMNO leading lights who wish to see the Unity Government fail.
It was always going to be a tough process, and add to that those who either harbour passive ill will or even active saboteurs.

Ismail Sabri is very likely one of those who are negative about the whole arrangement, and he has a personal stake in wishing it fail.
