RoS’ decision blow to those trying to topple Zahid and Tok Mat, says Umno man

PETALING JAYA: The Registrar of Societies’ (RoS) endorsement of the no-contest motion for Umno’s top two posts is a blow to a faction in the party seeking to topple the president and deputy president, an Umno leader said.

Supreme Council member Puad Zarkashi said RoS’ decision has effectively ended attempts from within the party to throw Umno into disarray.

“We are confident there is a mastermind who was behind the report lodged with RoS,” Puad told FMT.

“The mastermind is disappointed since his efforts to topple the party president and deputy president have failed.”

Puad said there were camps in Umno who were dissatisfied that the party had joined forces with Pakatan Harapan to form the unity government.

Yesterday, Umno president Ahmad Zahid Hamidi revealed that RoS had cleared the party of any wrongdoing after it approved a no-contest motion for the top two posts in its elections.

Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki was also not surprised by RoS’ decision, which he said was proof the party had not violated its own constitution.

“It turns out that what Umno has done was in accordance with the (party’s) constitution and was ratified by the Supreme Council,” he said.

Two Umno members had filed a complaint with RoS after the no-contest motion was approved at the party’s general assembly in January.

The motion ensures that Zahid and his deputy, Mohamad Hasan, popularly known as Tok Mat, will be returned unopposed in the party elections.

The polls will commence on March 11, with the Wanita, Youth and Puteri leadership posts being up for grabs, while division officials, the three vice-presidents, and members of the Supreme Council will be elected on March 18.
