KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 19 — Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Religious Affairs) Datuk Mohd Na’im Mokhtar called out the organisers of a PAS Youth parade in Terengganu for being callous with their choice of outfits and portrayal of Islam.

He said by choosing to use Islamic symbols, their parade had caused members of the public to raise their concerns that the parade could cause racial disharmony.

“In my opinion, to march in that manner was wrong and gives people a bad impression of the country and Islam. It’s best the organisers highlight the peaceful and harmonious side of Islam that will strengthen our unity.

“All parties are responsible for our peace and harmony and any actions that can cause public unrest must be avoided at all costs.

“The department feels this matter should be handed to the authorities to investigate and ascertain if any breach of public security has occurred,” he said in a statement.

This came on the heels of reports that Terengganu police would be speaking to Terengganu PAS Youth, who were the organiser of the event.

“We are looking into it. Now we are waiting to see if a report has been made and what actions we can take from a criminal point of view. We are evaluating.

“We will inform you later (when investigations will be done),” Setiu district police chief Afandi Hussin was quoted as saying by The Malaysian Insight.

PAS Youth had organised a gathering called Perhimpunan Pemuda Islam Terengganu (Himpit) over two days on February 17 and 18 in Bari Indah Beach Resort in Setiu.

The costume parade caught people’s attention as participants were seen wielding fake weapons such as swords and bows, while clad in mock armour.

Pictures and videos of the event were shared on social media, leading some to comment that it sent the wrong message.

Comment: wrong message? This is perhaps the real message but was hidden all this while?

  2. Similar playbook as UMNO's brandishing of Keris by Hishammuddin.

  3. Why are members of the evangelical Christian party so paranoid about costumes parade but uphold similar processions by idol worshippers?
