Apology to 'save PM's face' - PAS leader's son retracts claim

The son of Perak PAS chief Razman Zakaria, who last week claimed that his father apologised to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim only to 'save the PM's name', has retracted his remarks.

According to Anwar's lawyer Sankara Nair, Muhammad Rif'aat's (above) retraction of the claim was conveyed to them by Razman's lawyers yesterday.

"He has duly deleted all the related postings on his Facebook account and went further to deactivate his Facebook account as of yesterday," Sankara told Malaysiakini.

Following this, the lawyer added that Anwar has agreed to put the matter to rest.

On Feb 9, Razman, who is also the Gunong Semanggol assemblyperson, apologised to Anwar in the High Court in Taiping for claiming during the 15th general election campaign last year that Anwar condoned lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) practices.

The apology was part of a settlement agreement between Razman and Anwar. Razman also undertook never to repeat such claims in the future, according to Sankara.

Rif'aat later took to Facebook saying that the apology was only to avoid "more dirt" from being unearthed and to save Anwar's name.

"If the case was prolonged, a lot more dirt would have been unearthed.

"Because Anwar has previous convictions and sentence (sic), both sides agree for the case to be closed, to save Anwar's name as the PM. (The case is) settled," Rif'aat, who is Lenggong PAS Youth chief, wrote in response to a comment by a netizen who had shared news clippings on Razman's apology.

  1. The seed did not fall far from the tree.

Anwar should sue the son and not settle the case.
