DAP aims at 18 seats for Selangor polls, including Teratai

DAP currently controls 15 of the 56 seats in the Selangor state assembly.

PETALING JAYA: Selangor DAP is to contest 18 seats in the coming state assembly elections, including the Teratai seat which was lost to Warisan by defection.

Selangor DAP vice-chairman Ng Suee Lim said the 18 seats comprise the 16 that the party won in the 2018 elections and two seats contested by Bersatu when it was a part of Pakatan Harapan.

DAP won 16 seats in 2018 but lost Teratai in January last year, when assemblyman Bryan Lai left the party to join Warisan.

Ng said every member party in PH would defend their seats. “Even though there are ‘frogs’ and ‘traitors’, the principle is that we (PH parties) will defend our seats,” he told FMT.

The two extra seats sought by DAP were Semenyih and Selat Klang, both of which are Malay-majority constituencies.

Ng said Selangor PH would finalise seat allocations among member parties this month.

PH holds 40 seats in the current state assembly, and also has the support of Barisan Nasional (5 seats), Parti Bangsa Malaysia and Warisan.

Two weeks ago, PKR deputy president Rafizi Ramli said PH and BN could win 53 of the 56 seats in Selangor if they joined forces.

When asked whether DAP was willing to surrender any seats to BN for the coming election, Ng said it would depend on discussions on the matter.

“I cannot rule out anything but everything will be based on discussions. Of course with winnable seats, this is difficult to negotiate, we can’t compromise. PKR and Amanah have the same principle,” he said.
