PETALING JAYA: Umno cannot afford to make another mistake after the crushing defeat the party and Barisan Nasional (BN) faced in last month’s general election (GE15), says Sembrong MP Hishammuddin Hussein.
In a video clip posted on his Twitter account, Hishammuddin said last month’s loss should make all party members “realise and repent”.
“In GE15, BN lost terribly by winning only 30 seats. The results should make us realise and repent, especially members of Umno and BN,” he said.
Umno won 26 seats at the Nov 19 polls, with MCA claiming two and MIC and PBRS each securing one.
BN’s 30 seats was its worst election performance ever. By comparison, Pakatan Harapan won 82 seats while Perikatan Nasional took 74 seats.
Hishammuddin stressed that Umno and BN must work towards improving themselves, adding that “there is a lot of work to be done” to restore the public’s confidence in the party.
“We cannot afford another misstep,” he said.
The BN treasurer-general also advised Umno’s grassroots to remain united.
“Now, that I have more time and I’m not as busy as before, InshaAllah I will spend this time the best I can for the future of the party,” he said.
“To the grassroots… stand together and move forward.”
