MCMC yet to receive complaint against netizens targeting Dr Amalina’s daughter
The Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) said it has yet to receive a complaint from the UK-based surgeon and medical researcher Dr Amalina Che Bakri regarding lewd comments posted online targeting her nine-week-old daughter.
It said it will assess the matter and respond accordingly once the complaint has been received.
“We also note that Dr Amalina is considering lodging a police report on this matter. MCMC will provide technical assistance to (the police) if necessary,” it said in a statement to Malaysiakini today.
Amalina, who is from Malaysia, is a science communicator on social media particularly when it comes to medical issues.
Recently, she picked up on a follower’s question about circumcision services for female infants in the UK, to which she replied that it is illegal in the country.

“Female circumcision”, or khitan in Malaysia, refers to nicking the tip of the clitoris and teasing out a piece of the tissue using a penknife or razor. This is performed on children as young as one or two months old.
The practice is allowed in Malaysia, but in the UK is considered a form of female genital mutilation. Those who arrange or carry out the procedure on any UK citizen or permanent resident may face up to 14 years imprisonment, even if the procedure was carried out outside the UK.

After Amalina’s comments were carried in the media, however, some netizens responded by posting sexual remarks about her daughter on social media that she reportedly described as “disgusting, insulting and obscene”.
“I am not affected by words thrown at me, but they had crossed the line when they made sexual comments about my innocent daughter. Please leave my daughter alone,” New Straits Times quoted her as saying.
She also chastised media outlets who sensationalised her remarks with “clickbait headlines” and encourage their readers to fight and slander each other.
“Where are your ethics? Even the comments section has no moderation. I hope this matter gets the attention of the authorities,” she was quoted as saying.
Yesterday, she posted on Twitter that she has lodged a report to the MCMC and intends to follow this up with a police report.
