MUAR, Oct 22 — A Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (Muda) fund-raising dinner, featuring several of the party’s top leaders, was again marred by commotion and unruly behaviour after a group of about 40 youths descended on the venue here tonight.

During the height of the fracas, the second incident since last Sunday, several cars were damaged, while a Muda representative suffered minor injuries after he fell when a firecracker was set off outside the event at the Yong Sheng Banquet Hall in Jalan Bakri here.

It was learnt that police managed to apprehend three youths after they made a second attempt to disrupt the event.

Among the casualties was Muda co-founder Lim Wei Jiet whose Honda City car was dented.

Meanwhile, Sabah Muda chief Amos Thien was reported to have sustained minor injuries after a fall due to a firecracker that startled him during the melee.

Johor Muda chief Azrol Rahani said the commotion started at 9.30pm where a group of 30 masked youths, sporting black hooded sweatshirts, attempted to force their way into the banquet hall.

He said the group acted in a provocative manner where they shouted at the organisers, asking them to stop and leave the venue.

“The provocateurs were difficult to identify as they refused to reveal their faces.

“They then started to throw plastic bottles, shoved Muda volunteers and members, light firecrackers as well as kicked and damaged parked vehicles before fleeing the scene,” said Azrol in a brief statement issued here tonight.

Tonight’s event, headlined as ‘Malam Mesra Muo’ is a Muda event featuring several of the party’s leaders, including its president Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

Azrol added that the organisers managed to take down the registration numbers of the cars used by the group.

“We will again lodge a police report and provide details and evidence that we have to assist investigations.

“The mastermind of such dirty politics must be caught! This is a democratic country,” he said.

Earlier, Syed Saddiq took to Twitter asking why there was another round of provocation as he was only hosting a dinner event.

He said that when Muda members enquired on where the group came from, they resorted to intimidation tactics.

“They threw bottles, firecrackers and damaged a guest’s car,” he tweeted, before ending by thanking the police for their assistance.

Last Sunday, another Muda ceramah in Muar featuring Syed Saddiq was disrupted by a group of unruly youths on motorcycles.

Muda volunteers and police then moved in to chase off the provocateurs, but the group returned later and continued to make a scene on the road leading to the ceramah area.

It cannot be determined if the same youth group was responsible for tonight’s commotion.
