DAP’s ex-Paloh rep to contest for Wee’s Ayer Hitam seat
Former Paloh assemblyman Sheikh Omar Ali will stand in Ayer Hitam, where MCA president Wee Ka Siong is expected to defend his seat for a fifth term.
PETALING JAYA: DAP’s former Paloh assemblyman Sheikh Omar Ali will be contesting for the Ayer Hitam parliamentary seat in the general election.
MCA president Wee Ka Siong is widely expected to defend the seat for a fifth term, having represented the parliamentary constituency since 2004.
In the 2018 general election, Wee defeated DAP strategist Liew Chin Tong by a slim majority of 303 votes.
Sheikh Omar won the Paloh state seat in GE14 but failed to defend it during the Johor state election in March. He lost to MCA’s Lee Ting Han by 3,176 votes.
At a fundraising event in Muar, Johor, last night, DAP secretary-general Loke Siew Fook also announced that Pang Hok Liong will be defending his Labis seat while Skudai assemblyman Tan Hong Pin will stand in Bakri.
Tan will be seeking to retain Bakri for DAP, a seat that former minister Yeo Bee Yin won for the party in 2018 with a majority of over 23,000 votes.
Pang first won the Labis parliamentary seat in 2018 by beating MCA’s Chua Tee Yong by 3,408 votes.
On Wednesday, Loke announced that Yeo will be contesting in the Puchong parliamentary seat, while Gobind Singh Deo will vie for the Damansara seat.
Loke said the party wanted to embrace diversity by fielding candidates of various races and backgrounds.
He is expected to announce the other candidates for southern Johor on Sunday.
Johor has 26 parliamentary seats and there will be no state seats being contested, as the state election was held in March.
Malaysians will go to the polls on Nov 19, with early voting set for Nov 15.
