PAS targets 'ignorant' Muslim youth as GE15 looms

PAS MUKTAMAR | PAS has identified Muslim youth said to be "ignorant" of religion and "even more ignorant" of politics as potentially being kingmakers in the next 15th general election.

Party president Abdul Hadi Awang said PAS should focus its efforts to attract as many voters as possible, particularly among youth and first-time voters.

"A critical factor to PAS' victory in GE15 lies in how far our machinery will be able to master behaviours of youth voters, a majority of who will be first-time voters and said to be disinterested in political issues," said Hadi in his presidential address at the 68th PAS Muktamar held at the Kedah PAS Complex in Kota Sarang Semut today.

"The deciding votes among youth must be given focus and targeted.

"Particularly among Muslims who are ignorant in religion and even more ignorant in political aspects that will determine the future of the nation," said the Marang MP.

The upcoming GE15, widely speculated to be called before year-end, has seen a significant increase in the number of voters following the implementation of the policy of lowering the voting age to 18 years old and the Automatic Voter Registration (AVR) system which came into effect on Dec 15 last year.

Based on the Election Commission’s electoral roll as of February 2022, the total number of Malaysian voters has now reached 21,056,108 with an increase of 40.90 percent (6,115,484 voters), compared to the total number of voters in the 2018 general election.

As many as 26 parliamentary constituencies have gained more than 50,000 voters each. Most of these are in Selangor and Johor.

  1. It is expected that most Undo18 will vote for Race and Religion supremacist parties.
