PETALING JAYA: Barisan Nasional divisional and state leaders should not discuss seat distribution for the general election but let the top leadership decide, the coalition’s deputy chairman Mohamad Hasan said today.

Mohamad said BN component party chiefs and the BN political bureau would discuss seat distribution in order to maintain harmony and avoid uneasy situations in the coalition.

After a meeting with the Kedah BN election machinery in Alor Setar today, Mohamad said he had advised the meeting to leave seat distribution matters to the presidents of the parties and the BN political bureau, Bernama reported.

“(Later) we will present our strategy and from there we will look at it overall,” he said. Mohamad said he was confident that once the matter had been decided at the highest level, state and division leaders would be able to accept the decision.

He said BN leaders at the highest level have not discussed the matter and the position of seats between BN parties remained at status quo.

BN officials were collecting information on preparations at the state and division levels, after which a report will be handed over to Prime Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob.

Umno hopes for RoS decision by July 31

Mohamad, who is also Umno deputy president, said the party hoped the Registrar of Societies would reach a decision by July 31 regarding Umno’s application to amend the party’s constitution to delay party elections.

“Give a ‘yes’ or ‘no’. If it is a ‘yes’ then Syukur Alhamdulillah, if ‘no’, then we will have to make an appeal to the (home) minister. We need to be ready, because our tenure as party office-bearers expires at the end of the year.

“If there is a need for party elections, we have to hold meetings … 22,000 branches and 191 divisions is not an easy task, we do not want the matter to be prolonged and risk (party) dissolution,” he said.
