11 grilled over Turun protest, Adam Adli vows they won't be silenced


Police have called in 11 people for questioning at the Dang Wangi district police headquarters today over the Turun protest in Kuala Lumpur last Saturday.

Those summoned include PKR Youth chief Adam Adli Abdul Halim, Amanah Youth deputy chief Abbas Azmi, and Pejuang’s young women’s wing chief Nurul Ashikin Mabahwi for the July 23 demonstration outside of the Sogo shopping complex in protest of the recent price hike of goods.

Speaking to the media today, Adam highlighted how this was not the first time the police have called them in over such a protest.

“In fact, this has been our third or fourth time coming into (Dang Wangi district police headquarters),” he said outside the headquarters after he was questioned.

When asked what the next step will be if the government penalises them, Adam said they will not allow the government to silence them.

“No matter what, we cannot let our voices be silenced. The more pressure we receive, the more we will fight back.

“Many people have been affected, and I hope the public understands that we are protesting as it is our right to protest,” he added.

PKR Youth representatives were previously called in for questioning on July 24 over the same matter.


Stop the intimidation

Bandar Kuching MP Kelvin Yii who was present to show solidarity said the government should stop all forms of intimidation, especially towards students.

“We know that police have other work. They should prioritise the other work instead of constantly calling protestors in for questioning,” he said.

Yii also wanted the ministers to take a pay cut.

“We are in tough times now, the economy is bad, prices are rising, the rakyat is in disarray, and this should be the most important step to handle this.

“However, they formed a jihad and are going against their own rakyat,” he added.

Meanwhile, Amanah Youth vice-chief Abbas Azmi said: “It is impossible for the government to change laws if we do not call out issues that are occurring in the country.

“We have not completely healed from the effects of the pandemic and we will keep fighting back until we get what is best for the public,” he added.

With the 11 people called in for questioning, the remaining 15 from the total of 26 will be quizzed at the IPD Dang Wangi tomorrow.
