Malaysian PM must learn to dress more modestly like Jokowi
INDONESIAN president Joko Widodo a.k.a. Jokowi hasn’t lost a bit of his charisma dressed in his trademark white shirt and dark slacks. In fact, he feels very much out of place wearing a suit and tie – or has hardly appeared donning any exorbitantly-priced clothing apart from patterned batik wear.
Contrast that with his Malaysian counterpart Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob, who seemingly relies on pricey dressing to exude confidence.
To-date, the most expensive component of his ‘attire’ probably comes in the form of a gadget – the Audemars Piguet watch which retail price is estimated at RM292,000 – which is perceived as ‘sinful’ given many ordinary Malaysians are currently subject to belt-tightening due to escalating inflation which has eroded their living standard tremendously.
Considering that his appearance from top-down will never escape public scrutiny from now on – ever since his blunder of donning a RM5,500 black, blue, and white designer shirt by British luxury brand Burberry – perhaps the honourable PM needs a fashion consultant by his side.
This is to advise him how not to dress to kill as would the British secret agent 007 a.k.a. James Bond does – but instead, how not over-dress at his official functions.
As if he has not learned his lesson, the Bera MP who seems to have a penchant for anything Burberry was again spotted in public donning a pinkish red collared-shirt valued at RM6,900 as he denied the Government making a U-turn on ceiling prices for chicken but was only listening to the people.
Ironically, this time around he found a supporter for his action in Padang Rengas MP Datuk Seri Nazri Abdul Aziz, who rationalised that the PM’s wearing of expensive or branded clothing is not unusual because based on his previous experience as a former minister, the PM tends to receive many gifts in the form of clothing and other branded and expensive items.
Nazri further chastised Lembah Pantai MP Fahmi Fadzil for bringing up the matter, claiming that he was confident that Malaysians do not care about the price of the PM’s clothing because Ismail Sabri is focused on efforts to reduce the people’s burden due to the rising cost of living.
“Fahmi can ask his boss Anwar Ibrahim when he was deputy prime minister, and that is only the deputy prime minister and not the prime minister, many people had gifted him expensive and branded items including clothes,” he chided.
Well, in that case, the PM would have to come clean by declaring or revealing every piece of gift he received and if the giver/s did receive any special favours in return.
In such tough times, the people don’t expect much from the PM but they surely expect their leader to show some empathy to all ordinary folks who are struggling to feed and clothe their families. Ultimately, the PM has to walk the talk. – June 27, 2022

One must not forget the saying "clothes do not a man make"
