Syed Saddiq Responds To Singer Facing Death Sentence For Allegedly Growing & Distributing Cannabis

Just yesterday, a local singer and composer was charged at the Petaling Jaya Magistrate’s Court for allegedly distributing cannabis at his condominium unit in Kota Damansara.

He was also charged in the Sessions Court for allegedly growing 17 cannabis plants at the same location.

When arriving at the Petaling Jaya Court Complex, he had requested for media personnel present at the scene to pass a message along to Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA) President and Muar MP, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman.

“Send my regards to YB Syed Saddiq, ask him to quickly expedite the approval of cannabis for medicine in Parliament,” he had said.

Well, since then, Syed Saddiq has responded to the singer via a Twitter post.

He wrote, “I pray that Yasin (the singer) has the best defense in court. My stance has not changed. We should legalise medical cannabis NOW! Follow the science and data.”

He also included a clip from a Parliament session where he presented his standpoint on medical cannabis and hemp, and urged the authorities to follows the data and science that has been presented in order to look into and approve the hemp and medical marijuana industry for Malaysia.

I have always taken a stand AGAINST capital punishment. It's grossly, brutally and religiously (I admit I am an atheist but am appealing to those religious) wrong to take away a person's life behind the sarong of the State.

If need be, jail perpetrators of serious crimes "for life", not as per the Western concept of 'life imprisonment' which works to be less than 20 years, but actually behind bars for the rest of the prisoners' natural lives, non-parole-able, assuming the criminals have been convicted of very serious and/or violent crimes.

As for the legal medical use of marijuana, there are already countries with such legislations so I cannot see a rationale for imposing capital punishment on a person having 17 cannabis plants even if Malaysia chooses not to follow those countries.

  1. After all, the leaves of the plant are a good source of roughage for the constipated out there...
