Johor polls: PAS not satisfied with Umno's 4 seat offer


Negotiations between Umno and PAS over rights to field candidates for the Johor legislative assembly broke down because the latter is seeking a bigger slice of the pie.

Umno only wants PAS to field four candidates, but the latter is claiming seats that BN could not win during the 2018 election.

There are 56 seats in the Johor legislative assembly. BN, the coalition which Umno leads, won 19 seats and in the process, failed to retain 18 seats during the 2018 election, all of which were picked up by Pakatan Harapan.

Speaking to Malaysiakini, deputy PAS president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said his party's strategy was superior because it would "ensure" Harapan's defeat.

"PAS respects Umno's position to go solo. For PAS, we have extended our hand to cooperate and unite the ummah.

"Offering us just four out of 56 seats, in my mind, is not a good idea. PAS is only seeking seats that were not won by BN, especially seats held by Amanah (a Harapan component party).

"Our offer will strengthen cooperation and unite the ummah. Our goal is to ensure Harapan doesn't return to power in Johor," he said.

If PAS was eyeing all the seats which BN could not win, that means PAS was eyeing 37 candidates. During the 2018 election, PAS fielded 40 candidates, of which only one won.

Amanah, a PAS splinter party, won six seats during the 2018 Johor legislative assembly election.

It is understood that Umno splinter party Bersatu - which leads the Perikatan Nasional coalition where PAS is a member - has offered PAS a chance to field 15 candidates.

Meanwhile, Tuan Ibrahim said Perikatan Nasional (PN) would be giving its all during the upcoming Johor elections.

Asked if PAS will be using the PN banner during the Johor election, Tuan Ibrahim said it would be decided by the party leadership soon.

Ditch DAP, if you want to work with us in Johor, PAS veep tells Amanah

GOMBAK: PAS vice-president Idris Ahmad says the party is open to working with Amanah in the upcoming Johor state polls, provided it ditches its Pakatan Harapan (PH) ally DAP.

“We can (work) with Amanah, but on the condition that they leave DAP,” he said when asked to comment on an Amanah man’s call for PH to work with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in the state elections.

He was responding to former Amanah central committee member Mazlan Aliman urging PH to look beyond other opposition parties like Pejuang, Warisan and Muda and also consider cooperation with Perikatan Nasional (PN) in order to prevent a Barisan Nasional (BN) victory.

Meanwhile, Bersatu Supreme Council member Muhammad Faiz Na’aman backed calls for PN to work with the entire opposition bloc in challenging Umno-BN at the Johor polls.

The Johor state assembly was dissolved on Saturday after weeks of speculation and calls from Umno leaders for fresh polls. The Election Commission will meet on Feb 9 to decide on the date for the state elections.

Johor Umno deputy chief Datuk Nur Jazlan Mohamed said there was no need for his party and the Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition to cooperate with PAS for the still unannounced state election here.

He said it should already be clear by now that BN will be contesting on its own in the premature Johor poll and the 15th general election.

“This means that there won’t be any cooperation between Umno and PAS or the Muafakat Nasional (MN) alliance, no matter what PAS deputy president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Mat said.

“That is his right. For me, let us leave it to fate after this,” said Nur Jazlan when met at the Johor Umno liaison office in Jalan Yahya Awal here today.

Then yesterday, as reported by also MM, Tok Mat said:

Johor Umno was more keen for the party to move solo with Barisan Nasional (BN).

“The Johor Umno Liaison Committee chairman and state BN chairman is more keen to go it alone, so we will discuss at the central committee level and decide at the special meeting,” he said.

But PAS on hearing the above went frantic and insisted on cooperating with UMNO, knowing without the Grand Old Malay Party, the Lebai's face oblivion in the state election, wakakaka.

But somehow someone in UMNO offered PAS 4 seats, to which PAS deputy party president Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man had the cheek to say his party's strategy was superior because it would "ensure" Harapan's defeat even though in 2018 it won only 1 out of 40 seats contested, wakakaka.

And who was it that still tok-kok about the "big tent" approach to compete with UMNO-BN, when PAS has been consistently and ferociously against the DAP?

One of the disappointing issues to emerge from all these dialogues has been PAS very racist anti-DAP mentality when a religious party should not be racial but in fact above racism, but I dream, wakakaka.
