“Unlike Mukhriz, Anwar doesn’t need nepotistic ties to stay relevant in M’sian politics!”
PENANG Deputy Chief Minister II Prof Dr P Ramasamy has hit back at Pejuang president Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir’s remarks about Pakatan Harapan chairperson Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.
According to Ramasamy, Mukhriz, who could not even complete two full terms as Kedah Menteri Besar, is hardly in a position to make disparaging comments about Anwar.
“While it is ultimately Malaysians who will judge Anwar’s suitability as the next prime minister, it is not for Mukhriz to say that Anwar is not appropriate for the post of prime minister of the country,” he retorted.
“Anwar would have been the prime minister a long time ago when he was deputy to the former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammed, Mukhriz’s father.
“It was Mahathir who spoiled his chances by imprisoning him for some trumped up charges. Much later, Anwar was Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) choice of prime minister when the coalition won the general election in 2018 but unfortunately, Anwar was in prison.
“Mahathir was made the interim prime minister until such time that Anwar was pardoned to return to active politics.”
Ramasamy went on to insist that Mahathir should have made way for Anwar to succeed him, and that instead of paving way for Anwar, Mahathir had “hijacked the post”.
“Whose fault was this – is Anwar or the PH leadership to be blamed for all this? Was it Anwar’s fault that the infamous ‘Sheraton Move took place, resulting in the formation of Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin’s backdoor government?” he demanded.
“Why did Mahathir refuse to abide by the agreement with the PH coalition to vacate the prime minister’s post to Anwar? Did Mahathir create the pre-conditions for the ouster of the PH government?”
Ramasamy further remarked that whatever Mukhriz might say about Anwar, the fact remains that Anwar would have been prime minister had Mukhriz’s father honoured the agreement with the PH coalition in the first place.
“Perhaps Mukhriz would want to examine and digest a bit of history before joining others in saying that Anwar might not be appropriate as the prime minister,” he pointed out.
“Is he suggesting that his father should be given another chance to go at the post? I am not sure whether he is deluded into thinking that that somebody else might stand a chance to become the prime minister for third time.”
While Anwar might have lost his opportunity in the past, Ramasamy noted that the former still stands a chance in the future, provided that PH gains political ascendancy in the next general election (GE15).
“There might be calls for the resignation of Anwar and other PH leaders, but this is expected. Without Anwar, the Opposition could not have risen to its present level and strength,” he commented.
“Anwar might have his detractors, but he, unlike Mukhriz, doesn’t need nepotistic ties to be relevant in Malaysian politics.
“PKR has over 30 Members of Parliament but Pejuang has four. In comparison with PKR, Pejuang is a ‘mosquito party’ and in tropical countries like Malaysia, mosquito bites are common.
“In this aspect, Mukhriz’s diatribe is simply just another mosquito bite to Anwar.” – Jan 5, 2022
