We accept criticism, but my men have done their best, says fire chief
Some fire and rescue department officers, including the state directors, have been working non-stop for 72 hours, according to fire chief Mohammad Hamdan Wahid.
SHAH ALAM: The director-general of the fire and rescue department, Mohammad Hamdan Wahid said that his team is open to receiving criticisms and reprimands from the public who are dissatisfied with the department’s efforts in rescuing the flood victims.
He said that his men have tried their best to rescue flood victims, despite losing their own homes to the disaster as well.
According to Hamdan, hundreds of his men have lost their homes due to floods since October, and yet they did not make a fuss about it since they do not want to be seen as trying to garner sympathy.
“Our men have been prioritising the lives of others, to the extent of not knowing whether their own family members have been relocated due to the floods.
“Our men are not self-centred and are willing to gamble with their lives to save others,” he said in an Ops Banjir press conference in Taman Sri Muda.
Hamdan added that despite being mocked after assisting the flood victims, his men are open-minded and are willing to fix their flaws.
He said some of his officers, including the state directors, have been working non-stop for 72 hours, even not getting any sleep, so that they can help the flood victims.
“Some of them have sore feet due to non-stop work, but I have told them to be patient since it is part of their assignments.
“We could not stop people from making negative remarks on the fire and rescue personnel, but do not make accusations without accurate data, facts and evidence,” he said.
Hamdan said that his men serve all victims regardless of their backgrounds.
