No application received from Melaka ‘gang of four’, says Anwar

Anwar Ibrahim says the four assemblymen have not officially submitted any application to join Pakatan Harapan although they did express their intentions.

PETALING JAYA: The four Melaka state assemblymen who are at the centre of the political crisis in the state have yet to formally apply to join Pakatan Harapan (PH), said opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim.

The PKR president said the issue of the four assemblymen was discussed during a closed-door PH meeting this evening.

“They have not officially submitted (an application to join any PH party) although they have expressed their intentions.

“But since there is no application from them, we wait,” he said, adding that PH did not want to pre-empt the matter.

“Give them time and the opportunity to engage (with us) first,” he added.

The meeting was held among top PH leaders after DAP had refused to allow former DAP assemblyman Norhizam Hassan Baktee from contesting under the opposition coalition’s banner in the upcoming state election.

Norhizam and three other assemblymen – former chief minister Idris Haron (Sungai Udang), Noor Effandi Ahmad (Telok Mas) and Nor Azman Hassan (Pantai Kundor) – withdrew their support for Melaka chief minister Sulaiman Md Ali, triggering the state election after the collapse of the Melaka government.

Anwar had also clarified that the four assemblymen were invited to a PH event on Monday night to thank them for bringing change in Melaka.

On DAP’s rejection of Norhizam, who had left the party to join hands with Umno during the Sheraton Move, Anwar said PH was still in discussions over the matter.

“We have to wait but we also respect DAP’s opinion and we understand their reasons. But since the matter has not reached the application stage, we did not discuss it at length (during today’s meeting),” Anwar added.

The state election will be held on Nov 20, with nomination date set for Nov 8.
