KUALA LUMPUR – Jerlun MP Datuk Seri Mukhriz Mahathir is questioning the legitimacy and majority support of Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s position as prime minister in a tweet today, saying there are whispers that a confidence vote may not take place in the Dewan Rakyat at all.

The Pejuang lawmaker took to social media today to claim that Umno members have said that the motion of confidence for Ismail Sabri is no longer necessary.

Muhkriz, however, did not state which Umno members he was referring to, but went on to question if the 114 statutory declarations pledging support for Ismail Sabri still hold water.

“When people from Umno itself say that a vote of confidence is not necessary for Ismail Sabri, it sounds as if they are not confident of the 114 statutory declarations. 105 already confirmed to have been opposed,” Mukhriz tweeted.

On August 25, Pejuang chairman Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad had said that a vote of confidence for Ismail Sabri was not necessary given that the nation may not want a change of prime minister again in the event the Bera MP loses.

Yesterday, Attorney-General Tan Sri Idrus Harun had suggested that, because Ismail Sabri was appointed by the Agong, there is no need to test his legitimacy.

Idrus’ statement came a day after PKR president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said that Ismail Sabri had whispered to him during an August 25 meeting that a confidence motion may not be necessary. – The Vibes, September 5, 2021
