PAS risks loss of support over hunger for power

PETALING JAYA: An academic has alleged that PAS has changed from being an idealist party to an opportunist one since coming to power and is thereby risking a loss of support.
Speaking to FMT, Mohd Azizuddin Sani of Universiti Utara Malaysia (UUM) said he believed PAS leaders would support whoever they felt would remain in power and would now continue supporting Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin, even if the fiasco over the repeal of emergency ordinances was causing restiveness among the party’s grassroots.
“PAS is also likely to support Bersatu until the party can no longer serve its purpose of allowing it to be in power,” he said. “If Umno becomes stronger, PAS is likely to switch support to it instead.”
He also said MPs from PAS could lose voter support because it was likely that many grassroots members were appalled that their leaders had gone against the Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

He was referring to a statement from Istana Negara on Thursday that the government did not get the King’s consent before announcing the revocation of emergency ordinances.
PAS leader Takiyuddin Hassan had stunned the Dewan Rakyat on Monday by revealing that the ordinances had been revoked since July 21. However, he has been defended by PAS leaders, with some saying he was merely following orders from the prime minister.
Azizuddin said party leaders would now have to explain the matter to the grassroots to regain lost support,but it would be damaging for PAS to go against the Palace.
He said the leaders should expect a backlash from the grassroots if they continued to support Bersatu in the current standoff with the King.
Azizuddin also said there was evidence that PAS was already weakening.
In Kedah and Terengganu, he said, there was a split in the grassroots between those wanting their leaders to impose hudud laws and those opposing the notion.

In actual fact , the huge majority of PUS supporters continue to fully support PUS aw well as Taki.
