I’m not power hungry, says Dr M
Dr Mahathir Mohamad admitted that he had tried to form a pact with Pakatan Harapan to oust the current government but was rejected because he wanted to be prime minister for six months.
PETALING JAYA: Dismissing accusations of being power hungry, Dr Mahathir Mohamad said he offered to lead a proposed national operations council or Majlis Gerakan Negara (Mageran) because he wished to continue serving the country.
The former premier believed that the current national crisis should be handled by an experienced individual, such as himself.
“I’m not thinking of myself. If I was, I’d want to rest and enjoy (my personal time), but this issue requires someone with years of experience,” he told Sinar Harian in a Facebook live session today.
Mahathir noted that he had dealt with various financial and political issues as well as currency attacks throughout his first 22 years as prime minister.
Mahathir, however, acknowledged that he had tried to form a pact with Pakatan Harapan to overthrow the Perikatan Nasional government but was rejected because he volunteered to be prime minister for six months.
“I’m not asking people to accept my views but I just want to offer my experience to the country,” he said. “I’ve already held the top position in the country twice and that’s enough.”
According to him, Malaysia was at peace for around 50 years due to the decisions made by the 1969 Mageran after the racial riots. Parliament can also be held to listen in on Mageran’s proposals for the country.
During his royal audience with the Yang di-Pertuan Agong last Thursday, Mahathir had proposed that a national operations council take over the administration of the country from Perikatan Nasional. He also offered to lead the council.
On a separate matter, Mahathir, who is also Pejuang’s pro tem chairman, said he would try to ensure that his party was registered before the next general elections (GE15), as it had fulfilled all the requirements.
However, he said the party had “two to three” backup plans if it failed to be registered in time.
Mahathir added that there was no need to rush for GE15 as the country was far from achieving herd immunity.
“What must be prioritised is the safety and well-being of our people. We serve the people, not ourselves. That’s more important.”
He also criticised the government’s delay in establishing mobile vaccine centres and rolling out campaigns to register for the Covid-19 vaccine.
“If all these were done three months ago, then the cases could have decreased by now,” he said, adding that medical teams should be mobilised to vaccinate rural villages, rather than getting the public to travel out to the city to receive their jab.
