Ismail Sabri as DPM to woo Umno members?
Ismail Sabri Yaakob’s role will be to convince Umno members to work with PN in the next general election.
PETALING JAYA: Umno’s Ismail Sabri Yaakob may be named as deputy prime minister and general elections called before August if Umno ditches the governing coalition, according to a proposal by a number of PPBM Supreme Council members, a source said.
One source said Parliament was expected to sit in August and PPBM would definitely know Umno’s final stand on its cooperation with Perikatan Nasional (PN) by then.
“By then, we will know whether Umno is still with us or has withdrawn support for Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin,” he told FMT.
Due to this, some Supreme Council members have agreed to push for Ismail to be made Muhyiddin’s deputy so he could woo Umno members to support PN before the next general election.
“His role will be to convince Umno members to work with PN. Even Arau MP Shahidan Kassim has agreed to work with the ruling coalition,” he added. Ismail is currently the defence minister.
The source said PN would invite Umno for talks in a month to negotiate seat allocations.
“We are waiting for them. Right now, the negotiations can only be held among PPBM, PAS and Gerakan.
“In a way, our discussions are stalled because we are not sure if Umno will still work with us in GE15,” he added.
Several political pundits have said that the conviction of Umno bigwigs facing corruption charges is likely, following the declaration of emergency in January.
The six senior Umno leaders facing trials are Najib Razak, Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, Ahmad Maslan, Tengku Adnan Mansor, Azeez Abdul Rahim and Bung Moktar Radin.
Zahid had sent a letter recently declaring that Umno would not cooperate with PPBM in the next general election and that the party would only work with the government until Parliament is dissolved.

PETALING JAYA: MCA has confirmed a claim by MIC, its ally in Barisan Nasional, that the coalition never supported any decision to appeal to the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to order a Parliament sitting as soon as possible.
“I confirm what Vigneswaran said is correct,” MCA president Wee Ka Siong told FMT, referring to his MIC counterpart, S Vigneswaran.
Wee was asked to comment on a report by Malaysiakini, which quoted Vigneswaran as expressing shock over a statement issued by BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi yesterday.
Vigneswaran said the BN meeting that took place on Wednesday decided that they would not make an assumption on the King’s decree about Parliament reconvening.
“The BN meeting had never supported any decision to make an appeal to the Agong to order a Parliament sitting to be conducted as soon as possible,” he was quoted by Malaysiakini as saying.
PBRS deputy president Arthur Joseph Kurup, who was present at the meeting, also confirmed it.
“The BN Supreme Council did not agree to the press statement that was released by Datuk Seri Zahid,” he said in a text message.

KUALA LUMPUR: MCA is now seeking for the dissolution of Barisan Nasional (BN) following a call by party delegates demanding for the coalition to be "reforged".
The resolution which was reached by 1,637 delegates at the Wisma MCA during the party's 65th general assembly today, had provided the MCA central committee with the mandate to "initiate the dissolution process".
However, it remains to be seen how the party can go about doing it considering that it does not hold a veto power to break the coalition, despite the apparent prerogative displayed in the resolution.
"The central committee will initiate the process (seeking to dissolve BN). They will take the next course of action.
"A proposal will be submitted and discussed by the coalition's supreme council."
